Guggul also known as Commiphora mukul has been widely used in Asian herbal medicine because of its health benefits in addressing the common problems experienced by patients with diabetes. The pathology of diabetes is complex as well as to how it should be treated. For many years, patients have been on hypoglycaemic agents just to treat the symptoms of diabetes but the medications still seem to be insufficient in treating diabetes.
In the field of medicine, alternative options such as medicinal herbs are accepted supplements for medical conditions. The complex nature of diabetes somehow adds problems with high blood lipid level and metabolic regulation causing obesity and hypertension. Guggul extracts are famous for the treatment of diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and weight problems like obesity.
Health benefits of guggul supplement:
- Reduces lipid and cholesterol level by antagonizing steroid and lipid synthesis.
- Improves the natural production of insulin by protecting the beta cells of the pancreas.
- Reduces the hypertension because of its regulation of lipid synthesis.
- Supports in the regulation of blood sugar levels and symptoms of diabetes.
How guggul extracts work:
Guggulsterones are the active ingredient of guggul which is mainly responsible for its several health effects. Experts noticed people who take guggul to have lower cholesterol levels and are actually protected from diabetes. Guggulsterone is a potent steroid receptor ligand which inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol. Because of its antagonistic effect to the synthesis of cholesterol, it results to reduced lipid and cholesterol level in the blood. Diabetes is commonly associated with metabolic disorders because of the presence of obesity and metabolic disturbances. Because of the lipid regulating effect of guggul, it can treat hypertension, obesity, and metabolic disorders associated with diabetes.
Scientific basis: In a double-blind and randomized study, participants were given guggul extracts to determine its effect to lipid and cholesterol levels. After 24 weeks of treatment, the participants who received guggul extracts had significant decrease in lipid and cholesterol levels.1
Supports hypoglycaemia in diabetes (Type I & II)
Guggul extracts are known to control the blood sugar level because of its role in glucose and lipid metabolism. Other researchers state that guggul has a protective effect to the pancreas which causes natural production of insulin in the body.
Scientific basis: A randomized control study was conducted to diabetes mellitus induced rats. The rats were given oral guggul extracts (40mg/kg of body weight) and results show that guggul extracts were able to reduce blood sugar level and glycosylated haemoglobin. Researchers were able to conclude that guggul extracts produce good control of blood sugar levels because of its antioxidant action.2
Obesity and metabolic disorders
There are some studies stating that guggul can prevent weight gain in patients with diabetes. A pilot study revealed that guggul supplements induces weight loss in overweight adults.3 The weight loss effect of guggul is still under debate and needs additional supporting studies.
